I built a football coaching app for my 6 year old in one evening
My son had his first ever football tournament over the weekend, and in the run-up it rained in Japan for 35 days straight! Sadly, we couldn't get enough game practice in. So my solution: build a tailored solution!👍
The original request to Claude Code: Lets create a plan for the following: My 6 year old son has his first football (soccer) tournament coming up and I'd like to help teach him a bit more about the rules of the game and where he should position himself for when he is playing. For example what should he do or where should he stand when attacking and defending. What would be nice is to have an interactive top down view of a small pitch for matches between 5-7 players each team. Maybe there could be some preset buttons for attacking positions and defending positions. Also it would be good to be able to move the players and the ball around as well. This app/artifact should be simple and approachable to understand for a 6 year old. So any English should be simple as well. Let me know if you have any questions.
After a couple of back-and-forth Q&As with Claude, we had this nice, friendly colourful looking app, built with Opus 5.5!
We sat down together on the iPad and ran through the various scenarios, learning about positioning and basic rules such as corners, goal kicks and throw-ins. He particularly enjoyed dragging the players and the ball around the pitch and scoring goals.
After the tournament, I asked him, "Did you try to do anything you learned from the football app we used together?" He said, "Yes, stand next to the players." Quizzing him further, I asked, "When defending?" He slowly answered… "Yes." I'll take that as a win for now! and I'll try to build on it for the next tournament. Hopefully it doesn’t rain as much from now on too!
